The Washington County CDA is connecting teachers with area industry to help students explore local, in-demand career opportunities
Washington County continues to experience significant workforce growth particularly among residents aged 25 to 34, with a projected 65% increase between 2020 and 2030. Our Economic Development division is staying on top of the trends with grant support for EXCITE 2025: Exploring Careers through Industry Teacher Externships.
EXCITE is a proven, high-impact program that directly connects teachers, employers, and students. The course aligns educational outcomes with industry demands in a three-day summer professional development externship. Over 50 teachers from Washington County schools explored a diverse array of local businesses and organizations, including
• agriculture and natural resources,
• businesses and financial institutions,
• non-profit organizations,
• healthcare,
• manufacturing and engineering, and
• service and governmental organizations.
By immersing educators in local industries, EXCITE fosters a deeper understanding among teachers of the skills and competencies required in today’s job market so that they can incorporate real-world skills into classroom lessons. Ultimately, students are more effectively prepared for local job opportunities.
The 2025 externships were a success. Teachers reported a better understanding of how to enhance curriculum, how to find hands-on experiences for students, how to better provide advice for students based on real experience, and improved perspectives on alternative pathways for student career options and developments.
Businesses also expressed interest in continued connections, recognizing the significant value of educators as “workforce multipliers” and strengthening industry-education partnerships.
Strong partnerships between schools, employers, and the community will enable students to be better positioned to thrive. By aligning their skills with the needs of our growing job market, the next generation will not only find success but also strengthen Washington County’s future.
