Supporting Homeownership in Washington County
Washington County—with its abundant recreational opportunities, strong public schools, high rates of education and employment, and excellent health outcomes—is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in Minnesota. Perhaps the quality of life contributes to the fact that an impressive 82% of the residents here own their homes.
While homeownership has long been a path to economic prosperity and generational wealth for many Americans, a noticeable segment of Minnesota families has not benefited from historically established housing policies and subsidies. As a result, Minnesota’s homeownership disparities are among the worst in the nation. Compounding the problem are the increasing costs of living and childcare, high down payment requirements, rising mortgage interest rates, increasing property values, high insurance rates, and ongoing maintenance costs.
To help support local homeownership, the Washington County CDA is administering programs aimed at first-time and first-generation homebuyers.
